Dave Hughes Admits He Overpaid For His $3M ‘Block’ House, And Yeah, Durr

Spare a thought for Dave Hughes, who is currently experiencing a very hefty case of buyer’s remorse, upon realising that the $3 million and change he plonked down for a Melbourne home last year might have been a tad bit excessive.

The comedian purchased the newly-renovated and fully-furnished five bedroom house in Elsternwick after it featured on The Block, where it had been done up by young guns Josh and Elise.

He admitted at the time that he had bought the place on a whim, saying:

“I don’t live too far away and I was driving past and I was thinking, ‘gee, it’s a good spot, it’s a good house, it’s a good area.’ And now we own it.”

The reserve for the property was $2.62 million, but he parted with $3.067 million at auction, saying at the time that the property was a “bargain”, and would be an investment for years to come.

His bank manager, however, did not quite agree, and speaking to Stellar Magazine, he revealed that the property had been valued at “much less … enough less that it made me annoyed.” He explained:

“I went to get a bank loan the other day and they haven’t valued it the same as I paid for it, which is fine, but annoying because there were five bidders … For fuck’s sake … I just think it’s good value and in a few years’ time people are going to be going, ‘Well, fuck, didn’t he do well with it!’ I am playing the long game, all right? That is what I say to my wife, anyway.”

Hughes’ wife Holly reportedly asked him to keep his purchase private, and was not overly impressed when his mug showed up on the final episode of the show, as Scott Cam announced him as the successful bidder. Needless to say, The Block‘s producers were probably delighted.

Y’know what, though, if sinking an enormous amount of money into an Elsternwick townhouse makes Dave Hughes happy, then we are happy for him. In related news, we checked, and you are definitely still poor.
