Dannii Minogue Says UK Journo Threatened To Falsely Report She Was HIV Positive

The UK tabloids are notorious for their extremely unethical tactics in order to bag a good story, even at the detriment of a celebrity’s safety. Aussie icon Dannii Minogue (that’s right, ICON) recently appeared on Anh’s Brush With Fame where she recounted one reporter’s vile attempt at scoring an interview with her.

Minogue claims that while she was living in London, a reporter threatened to publish a false story alleging she was HIV positive unless she agreed to sit down for an interview.

“This was in London. I come home to my building and there’s a bunch of flowers for me. I take it up to my apartment and there’s a letter with it,” the singer revealed.

“I open up the letter and it says, ‘Hi, I’m such-and-such journalist and we are running a story tomorrow to say that you are HIV positive unless you contact us’.”

She adds, “What kind of blackmail is this that comes with a bunch of flowers?”

Minogue then called the journalist to hit back at the threat.

“We called up and said, ‘This is a really heavy accusation and you’d be in a really bad place to print it, because it’s not true.’”

Because the incident occurred before social media was a thing, Minogue said she felt like she had “no voice” and therefore contacted her doctor for help.

“Pre-social media, you have no voice to say what’s going on,” she said. “I rang my GP and I said, ‘I’m coming over to you now. I need help’.”

“I said, ‘They’re going to run this article and the only thing I can do is if you can take some blood now and you get the results to them immediately before they run this tomorrow’.”

After receiving the negative test results, she called the reporter back and said: “‘That’s what I told you on the phone – that I’m not HIV positive so don’t run the article because it won’t be good for you’.”
