Dakota Johnson Explains Why She Needed Therapy After Making ‘Suspiria’

Upcoming horror remake Suspiria is currently earning rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival, but at a press conference for the film, its star Dakota Johnson had to expand on her recent comments that it fucked her up so much that she needed therapy when it was done.

The original 1977 Dario Argento version was notoriously gory, and the Luca Guadagnino remake reportedly follows suit. In it, Johnson portrays an American student at a prestigious German dance school that turns out to be run by witches.

Clarifying her original comments, which were made in an interview with Elle, Johnson assured everyone that the film was not “traumatic”, but merely that its subject matter was a lot to deal with. She told reporters:

“First of all, I was not psychoanalyzed and I hope I never will be. I find sometimes when I work on a project and — I don’t have any shame in this — I’m a very porous person and I absorb a lot of people’s feelings. When you’re working sometimes with dark subject matter, it can stay with you and then to talk to somebody really nice about it afterwards is a really nice way to move on from the project. My therapist is a really nice woman.”

The film, which also stars Tilda SwintonChloe Grace Moretz and Mia Goth alongside Dakota Johnson, is out in Australia on November 8, and our bodies are ready.
