The Cut Writer Apologises For Calling Priyanka Chopra A “Scam Artist”

Priyanka Chopra

Mariah Smith, the writer behind the article labelling Priyanka Chopra a “scam artist” for marrying Nick Jonas, has apologised for her words.

Earlier this week, the New York Magazine‘s online site The Cut published Smith’s piece which delved into Chopra and Jonas’ relationship in the public eye. Dissecting their relationship timeline and interviews, Smith concluded that due to being 34-years-old, Chopra had trapped Jonas into a quickie marriage full of endless sponsorship deals.

It seems that she has it all – well, if “it all” includes marrying someone related to Kevin Jonas. But there’s something that not many people know, or choose to accept, about the global sensation that is Priyanka: She is a modern-day scam artist, in my opinion. That’s right: Nicholas Jonas married into a fraudulent relationship against his will this past Saturday, December the 1st, and I’ll tell you why I think so.

To conclude her article, Smith surmised that Jonas had just been looking for a “possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist.”

The backlash was swift and unforgiving with both Joe Jonas and his fiancée Sophie Turner denouncing the article. Over the weekend, Smith apologised.

“I want to sincerely apologise to Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas, and to the readers I offended and hurt with my words,” she said. “I do not condone racism, xenophobia, or sexism. I take full responsibility for what I wrote, and I was wrong. I am truly sorry.”

Following her apology, The Cut retweeted Smith’s words to “reiterate that we take responsibility for publishing this piece. We apologise to Mariah and everyone we let down in the process.”

Smith’s piece has since been replaced with a statement from the editor.

“Last night, the Cut published a post about Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s relationship that shouldn’t have gone up. We’ve received dozens of messages from readers expressing their anger. We want you to know that we hear you and we’re sorry.

“The whole piece missed the mark. There is no good explanation for this other than human error and poor judgement. This was a mistake, and we apologise to our readers and to Priyanka and Nick.”
