If you’ve switched on Netflix lately there’s a very good chance that the streaming giant has shoved Cursed in your face. It’s that new fantasy series starring 13 Reasons Why actor Katherine Langford.
Cursed is based on the novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler. It’s pretty much a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue (Langford), a teenage heroine with a kickass gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur (American Aussie Devon Terrell), a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgård) and deliver him an ancient sword. Throughout the journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the Red Paladin dickheads, and their complicit King Uther (Sebastian Armesto).
I’m one and a half episodes in so I can’t really comment on the series as a whole but so far, it’s not bad. It’s a beautiful series, hands down, and Langford is great in it. There are some familiar elements in it that you’ve seen dozens of times before, but for the most part, it feels new. Like Merlin, for example. The Merlins I’ve watched in the past have either been a) quirky and clumsy or b) old and wise. In Cursed, Merlin is a very big drunk. There’s also the question of Daniel Sharman, who stars as the Weeping Monk. I have no idea who the Weeping Monk is and I’m not about the spoil it for myself. All I know at this point is that he works for the bad guys.
Also, the stans love him – the mysterious guy in the hood. Shocker.
#Cursed has given us all a gift. That gift is Daniel Sharman as the Weeping Monk pic.twitter.com/pUxKhS1NR5

Reviews haven’t been too kind to the series, which currently holds a 57 per cent score on Metacritic and 72 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. Don’t let that taint your opinion though, it certainly hasn’t stopped the stans from adding a new show to their alters. I also suspect a number of the negative reviews have taken issue with a Black Arthur.
