Cruise The Hobbit Set With David Stratton

If your holiday requirements include sun, sand and cinema the folk at Crikey point us to a holiday worth ditching Cannes for, the Volendam Film Festival at Sea with David Stratton. If a celeb endorsed film-festival-slash-cruise sounds like a novel holiday concept, that’s ’cause it is, but please note that it involves boats, champagne and the presence of David Stratton who will mingle with guests, host Q&A sessions and screen his favourite films on a five star cruise ship bound for New Zealand. Silver Tigers ahoy!

The brochure explains: “Most afternoons David will introduce the day’s film and conclude with a Question & Answer session. He will carefully select the films shown during the festival and not reveal to anyone the films he has chosen, until the cruise, so they are a surprise! He promises to make them a fascinating insight into his life involvement in the cinema that will appeal to everyone on the cruise. He will also give a talk about his life in cinema. It will be a great cinematic experience!”

Aside from rubbing floaties with David Stratton, film buffs can look forward to a tour of the Hobbiton movie sets from which Peter Jackson filmed Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Sounds like something we’d endure a floating IMDB forum and/or geriatric death star to experience.

The cruise departs Sydney Harbor January 17 and returns January 31.
