Art Centre Gives Christmas Tree The Banksy Auto-Shredding Treatment

Christmas Tree

Two geniuses have recreated Banksy‘s self-destructing work of art with a Christmas tree and some tinsel because it is the festive season, after all.

I’m sure you remember but earlier this year in September, the iconic ‘Girl with Balloon‘ went under the hammer at the Sotheby’s Auction House and after somebody spent $1.7 million on it, it started to self-destruct to about its halfway point.

As Banksy revealed in an Instagram post after the… shredding, the renowned street artist had ~secretly~ built in a very real shredder into the painting.

“‘The urge to destroy is also a creative urge’ – Picasso” Banksy captioned the Insta post.

Edgy.

Anywhoo, at their local art centre volunteers Kelley Cartwright and Kasey Snyder decided to put together some artist-inspired Christmas tree displays.

As NME reports, the ‘shredded’ tree is on display at Parkersburg Art Center in West Virginia.

“There are a variety of artist-inspired trees on display including Yayoi Kusama, Peter Max, Leon Zernitsky, Helen Frankenthaler and Banksy,” Cartwright and Snyder told the Press Association.

The centre shared the photo to their Facebook page where it was very much appreciated.

As you can imagine, the pic’s gone OFF on Reddit with upwards of 88,000 votes in just a day.

As for the half-shredded ‘Girl with Balloon’, it’s now on display at Sotheby’s

Banksy however, has had to deny the whole thing was staged… because how do you hide a shredder in a painting without anybody noticing?

Taking to his Instagram recently, the artist captioned a picture of the portrait: “Some people think it didn’t really shred. It did. Some people think the auction house were in on it, they weren’t.”

Sotheby’s also told NME“We had no prior knowledge of this event and were not in any way involved.”
