Chelsea Peretti Says Leaving ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Wasn’t “Fully” Her Decision

Chelsea Peretti, the real life human form of the 100 emoji, departed Brooklyn Nine-Nine this week in an episode both iconic and worthy of the savagely apathetic Gina Linetti.

Peretti’s exit from season six left fans in mourning. One only has to turn to Twitter to see the extent of the grief so it comes as a little surprise to learn Peretti’s decision to leave the show wasn’t all hers.

Departing the series “wasn’t fully just my decision,” Peretti told TV Line following her farewell.“It’s hard to get into the weeds of what exactly transpired and how it all shook out, but it kind of came together to be this timing that presented itself,” she explained.

It sort of sounds like the Nine-Nine writing team did already have plans to write out Peretti’s character and it just so happened to coincide with her decision to leave.

“So I kind of knew that it was going to be happening for a while… [and was] holding on to this feeling of, like, ‘I’m going away from this family’ in my head.”

Despite this, Peretti added “there’s nothing but family feel” between herself and the Nine-Nine crew.

Last October, in a statement borrowed from Emmy Rossum – a statement Rossum used to announced her own exit from comedy series Shameless – Peretti told fans she was set to leave the show this season.

This won’t be the last we see of Gina, though. Both Peretti and Nine-Nine showrunner Dan Goor confirmed this in their respective statements at the time.

“I know for a fact that this isn’t the last we’ll see of Gina Linetti. I mean, she got run over by a frickin’ bus, and she only missed like a week of work,” Goor tweeted.
