Charlie Day Plays A Mute Hollywood Celeb In His Directorial Debut ‘El Tonto’

Everyone’s favourite It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia player – aside from Danny DeVito (don’t @ me) – Charlie Day is set to make his directorial debut with indie comedy El Tonto, as Collider writes.

Day wrote the movie – in which he also stars – about “an idiot mute who, after getting off a bus in Los Angeles, rises through the ranks to become a beloved Hollywood celebrity, only to lose it all”.

An idiot mute, yes, something new and different for Mr. Day. Certainly very different from his role in Horrible Bosses.

That’s a joke, chill it. We’re super intrigued to see how this will work considering he won’t be able to speak in the role – could it be a real Quiet Place lots of silence vibe? Except with an indie-comedy soundtrack?

Here’s hoping Day in the director’s chair doesn’t descend into this:

There’s no word yet on a supporting cast – although Collider says they’ve heard DeVito may take on a role, which sounds ideal. We’ll buy tix now.

Producers Christopher Lemole and Tim Zajaros said:

We’ve been looking to do something with Charlie for a while now. The script is hilarious, incredibly original and films like this just don’t get made anymore. We’re thrilled to get in on the ground floor of his directorial career, as we believe the sky’s the limit for him.

El Tonto is set to start shooting in LA in October.

Day is a co-creator, executive producer and writer for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and new series The Cool Kids, about three friends who are essentially the popular kids in a retirement community feeling threatened by a new neighbour, is set to premiere at the end of the month. He’s also got a sitcom in development for Apple with his It’s Always Sunny co-creator, Rob McElhenney.

The 13th season of It’s Always Sunny premiered in the US on FXX today.
