Black Mirror Creator Charlie Brooker Is Making A Mockumentary About 2020 & Dear God, Why

Black Mirror / Charlie Brooker

For whatever reason – I can’t think of any, right now – Black Mirror creator, Charlie Brooker, is making a mockumentary about 2020.

Honestly, leave it to the creator of Black fucking Mirror to take the year from hell and turn it into art. For those unacquainted with Brooker’s series, Black Mirror is a dystopian Netflix drama. Other words I can describe it with include “fucked”, “creepy”, “dark”, and “depressing”. Take your pick.

Funnily enough, Brooker said that he didn’t think the world could stomach a sixth season of Black Mirror during a pandemic.

“I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working on one of those,” Brooker told Radio Times in May.

“I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh,” he said.

HMM.

While Brooker hasn’t officially announced his next project, Hugh Grant let it slip during an interview with New York Magazine.

Grant had been chatting about his hit HBO series, The Undoing, when the magazine asked about his next plans.

“Charlie Brooker has written a mockumentary about 2020,” he said. “It’s for Netflix, and I am a historian who’s being interviewed about the year. I’m pretty repellent, actually! And you’ll like my wig.”

Well.

I think it’s safe to assume the mockumentary will zero in on the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps it’ll include the Australian bushfires that devastated the country, the demonstrations and protests around the world for Black Lives Matter, Joe Biden defeating Donald Trump in the US Election, and Trump’s hissy fit afterwards. Oh, I hope there’ll be some sort of reference to Four Seasons Total Landscaping as well.

In the meantime, you can watch seasons 1 to 5 of Black Mirror on Netflix. But if that’s just not an option, people are really raving about The Undoing right now.

The series follows Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman), a successful therapist, her devoted husband Jonathan (Grant), and their young son who attends an elite private school in New York.

Everything is perfect, until certain secrets comes back to haunt Grace: a violent death, a missing spouse, and a lot of terrible revelations.

You can stream The Undoing on Binge now.
