Cannes Film Festival: Predictions

The program of films selected to show and be in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was announced today.

Here are the some of the movies we’re most interested in:

Biutiful (Director: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu)

Talented Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez (Amores perros) is showing his latest directorial feature – his first since Babel in 2006 – starring the supremely handsome Javier Bardem. The Spanish language film, shot in Barcelona, is in competition for the Palme d’Or and, like Inarritu’s previous films, is bound to be confronting and beautifully shot.

Film Socialisme (Director: Jean-Luc Godard)

No one REALLY knows what legendary new wave director Jean-Luc Godard’s latest film is really about, but it’s freaking Godard so it looks incredible and has Patti Smith in it. The trailer has been out for a while and still no one really knows what it’s about.

CONFUSING TRAILER:

Of Gods And Men (Director: Xavier Beauvois)

Beavois, who directed the remarkable, gritty 2005 drama Le petit lieutenant and winner of the 1995 Jury Prize N’oublie pas que tu vas mourir returns to Cannes with another French drama about the 1996 kidnap and execution of seven French Trappist monks.

Kaboom (Director: Gregg Araki)

Gregg Araki is the poster child of contemporary independent and queer film making, he has a penchant for vortex-black humour, and isn’t afraid to be shockingly real. Kaboom, which is described as “a sci-fi story centered on the sexual awakening of a group of college students”, is screening out of competition, and is bound to be another shocking, confronting experience. We can’t wait.

Poetry (Director: Lee Chang-dong)

A gorgeously shot and profoundly moving film from Korea about an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease in search of the meaning from her life. Director (and former novelist) Lee Chang-dong’s previous projects that have been sentimental, lush-looking and – yes – poetic.

TRAILER:

Les Amours imaginaires (Director: Canada, Xavier Dolan)

The latest film from Canadian boy wonder and indie gay icon, 21-year-old Xavier Dolan, is competing in the Un certain regard category and is about a love triangle between three friends. He is an intriguing – and seriously handsome – young film maker.

Here he talks about film making and being gay bashed:
