Brooke Blurton has been announced as the first openly bisexual and First Nations Bachelorette for 2021, marking what is arguably a massive shift towards genuine representation on mainstream Australian TV. So from Brooke’s history on The Bachelor franchise to what she’s looking for her in her dream person, here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Bachelorette.

Has Brooke been on The Bachelor before?

The 26-year-old proud Noongar and Yamatji woman is no stranger to The Bachie franchise, first appearing on Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins‘ season of the show in 2018. At the time, Brooke chose to leave the series on her own terms after she realised Nick just wasn’t the one for her.

The following year, she appeared as one of the first openly bisexual Bachelor in Paradise contestants, alongside Alex Nation.

Unfortunately Brooke didn’t find The One on BIP either, but she’s absolutely ready to give The Bachelorette Australia her all. And this year, both men and women can apply.

“I am so ready for this,” Brooke said upon the announcement.

“I’ve done it twice before and now, having the opportunity to choose my person and who I want in my life, is a truly unique and special experience.”

Brooke said her perfect person is someone that loves her for her.

“I hope they offer shared values and compassion for others. All the dreamy things! I’m so excited and hope that I finally find that person I’ve been waiting for,” she said.

Has Brooke Blurton talked about being The Bachelorette Australia before?

Last year, during a chat on The Babble podcast, host and former Bachelor Matty J told Brooke that he was surprised when Network 10 announced sisters Elly and Becky Miles as dual Bachelorettes instead of her.

“I thought that you were gonna be the pick for The Bachelorette. Was a discussion had earlier this year?” Matty asked.

“Look, there was no offer made, but I wouldn’t say that I’m not open to it,” Brooke said.

“Um, there was kind of talk and speculation about certain things, and recently on a podcast, they were saying that I had to grow my followers in order to be the Bachelorette, but I don’t think that was necessarily the case,” Brooke continued.

“I’d be very open to it. I’m a little bit different in the sense that I date both sexes and whether Channel 10 and Warner Brothers would be up to a sort-of Bi Bachelorette, I don’t know what that would look like or if Australia would be ready for that.”

And hey, we most definitely are.

What does Brooke do?

Hailing from Western Australia, Brooke is a passionate youth worker, especially when it comes to Indigenous youth mental health.

In 2019, she became an ambassador for suicide prevention organisation R U OK?.

How much is Brooke Blurton being paid for The Bachelorette Australia?

Our gal is making bank just quietly! Back in July, we reported that Brooke’s salary for the Bachelorette Australia had leaked and was thought to be somewhere in the realm of $250,000. For those of you wondering, that’s $50k more than Matty J and $50K less than Sophie Monk scored for their seasons of The Bachelor Australia and The Bachelorette Australia respectively.

Is casting for The Bachelorette Australia open?

The show is now being filmed, so casting is closed for business.

Rumours of those already potentially locked in to try and win Brooke’s heart and many roses have started sprouting though. Jamie-Lee Dayz – one Brooke’s fellow contestants from the Nick Cummins/Honey Badger season – is a hotly-rumoured contestant.

An ~anonymous Bachie contestant~ told So Dramatic‘s Megan Pustetto back in July that the pair had chemistry while on the 2018 season, and Jamie was keen to apply for Brooke’s The Bachelorette Australia season after splitting with her girlfriend.

“They didn’t hook up in the mansion, but they were definitely attracted to each other and they had a close friendship after the show,” the source said.

How will a bisexual Bachelorette format work?

A bachelorette with both men and women vying for their time, heart, and televised smooches is set to involve a “teething out” period, Brooke told PEDESTRIAN.TV not long after she was announced as the next Bachelorette Australia lead.

“Obviously I’ve got a lot of input this time around,” she said.

“I think I’m very strong minded and I know what I want and I know what I don’t like, so I’ll be voicing that throughout the season.

“And they probably will live – sort of independently, both genders, which I think is probably appropriate, but more on a privacy level, you know what I mean?”

She also said “what will be will be” if contestants end up dating each other on The Bachelorette Australia, and she can’t be too upset if contestants find a connection with someone other than her.

“Whether I’m disappointed I didn’t feel that connection with that person, I can’t not be happy that they get to come out of that [experience] with something,” she said.

“Even if it’s not with me, like I’m not going to be too disheartened as a pretty reasonable person, and people know that.”

When does The Bachelorette start?

Not until after The Bachelor, which is currently airing in Australia. (And yes, we’re tuning the hell in to watch Bachelor Jimmy Nicholson find love.)

The Bachelorette usually begins airing on Channel 10 in late September / early October, so get hyped and prep your Bachie group chats.

Meanwhile, you can catch up on old seasons on 10 Play.

Stay TUNED.
