Britney Spears Is Finally Allowed To Choose Her Own Lawyer After 13 Years In A Conservatorship

Britney Spears has finally been given the power to choose her own lawyer in her ongoing conservatorship saga, after her request to do so was granted in a hearing on Wednesday. This is the first time in more than a decade Britney has been allowed to choose her own attorney, which absolutely has the potential to be game-changing.

Britney spoke in court on Wednesday, via phone, and at times sobbed over her life under the conservatorship, which she described as “fucking cruelty.”

She called for her father, Jamie Spears, to be charged with “conservatorship abuse”.

“I want to press charges against my father today,” Spears told Los Angeles County judge Brenda Penny, according to CNN. “I want an investigation into my dad.”

Spears said, “If this is not abuse, I don’t know what is.”

Britney was previously represented by court-appointed lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III, who asked the court to resign from his role after the singer’s devastating June court appearance.

During the June hearing, Britney said she wasn’t even allowed to choose her own attorney under the conservatorship.

Britney has selected former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart in his place, who was at the hearing on Wednesday.

Rosengart has represented a slew of Hollywood A-listers, including Keanu ReevesSteven Spielberg, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The attorney reportedly told Judge Penny that he would be filing paperwork in the following weeks to end the conservatorship, which has been in place since 2008.

Britney tweeted about the news today, using the hashtag #freebritney.

This is just the latest chapter in Britney’s conservatorship battle after her heartbreaking appearance in court last month.

The singer was dialled into court on June 23 and spoke for over 20 minutes about her life under the conservatorship.

She claimed she was forced to perform and to take lithium when she wasn’t ‘cooperating’. Most disturbing, Britney claimed she isn’t allowed to get pregnant.

“I was told, right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby,” Britney said.

“I have an [IUD] inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the [IUD] out so I could start trying to have a baby, but the so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children – anymore children.”

At the time, Britney said all she wants to do is own her own money and for her boyfriend to be able to take her for a drive, like a normal couple.

“And I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you,” Britney said.
