A Brisbane couple who allegedly kept a 42-year-old Fijian woman as their slave for eight whole years were due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today charged with trafficking a person, causing a person to remain in servitude, and allowing an unlawful non-citizen to work.
The Australian Federal Police allege that the woman was taken from Fiji to Australia for the purposes of domestic servitude.
Police raided the couple’s home in The Gap, in west Brisbane on July 19. The couple were arrested and charged, but made bail.
Today’s court hearing comes after a lengthy investigation, spurred on by info from the Salvation Army passed on to police in August 2016.
AFP Victim Based Crime Commander Lesa Gale said the investigation shone a light on the issue of human trafficking:

There are people in our community who are being exploited today and the Australian community needs to be aware human trafficking can happen anywhere. We want victims to know that there is a way out of these terrible situations for them, and that we can help.”

While AFP State Manager Queensland Commander Sharon Cowden was proud of the work of her staff:

I commend the work of our AFP officers who continue to investigate these complex crimes. This result demonstrates the dedication and hard work of our officers in protecting vulnerable members of our community.”
The case has been adjourned to September 22.
