Liberal Party candidate Mal Brough might have managed to dodge the blame for yesterday’s breaking #menugate saga now that the Brisbane restaurant from whence the menu came is declaring responsibility for the offending copy.
Yesterday, a leaked copy of the menu from Brough’s Brisbane LNP fundraising event surfaced which contained an item described as “Julia Gillard Kentucky Fried Quail – Small Breasts, Huge Thighs, and a Big Red Box”. Joe Richards, owner of the venue where the fundraiser was held, has come forward as the culprit Brough described yesterday as a non-party member who thought [sexist puns] would be “humorous” but is now “deeply apologetic”.
Mr Richards wrote an email to Brough that said: “There were never any menus distributed on the tables or in the restaurant. I created a mock menu myself as a light-hearted joke, however as I said I never produced them for public distribution. Unfortunately a staff member saw the mock menu, and unbeknownst to myself, posted it on their Facebook. It now appears that a third party for political reasons has distributed it, yet I can reassure you that no such menu was distributed on the night.”
Mr Richards’ statement (“light-hearted joke” etc) is more than likely the reason the UrbanSpoon entry for Richards & Richards is currently displaying the message “We’re sorry. This listing is currently frozen due to unusual or fraudulent activity.” So you can’t access reviews on the venue, but we hear the quail is the tits.
At a press conference that took place earlier today, Mal Brough condemned the menu saying “Neither the PM or any other woman should have to tolerate this sort of language.” He told the press a former staff member of Richards & Richards had made the allegation that the leaked menu was made available at the fundraising event but Brough claims “it was not there”.
Do you buy this explanation? Either the restauranteur is willfully copping to producing and endorsing this unacceptable sexist content or this game is rigged, man.
