Bride Goes Nuclear And Cancels Entire Wedding Over Pushy Mother-In-Law

There are few things as satisfying as a really good angry bride story, and this one, about a woman who straight-up cancelled her wedding to spite her pushy mother-in-law, really takes the drama to a whole new level.

In a post to a Reddit forum on toxic in-laws, the woman said that she and her now-husband, both aged 26, were planning their wedding when his mother stepped in with a non-negotiable demand for dozens of extra people to be invited.

The bride began her post by saying:

“Things have always been rocky with his mother. He is from a very wealthy family, and I haven’t really lived up to her expectations. I’m from a very comfortable middle-class family, and she refers to us as the ‘[bumpkins]’. She is overbearing and manipulative, and my husband admits the same.”

She went on to explain that she and her then-fiancé had been planning their wedding for around a year, and were looking to invite around fifty people, but that his mother had other ideas. She said:

“The thing is, a legit wedding ceremony has never really been us, it always felt like we were planning out of obligation. TWO MONTHS before our wedding date, his mother sends me a detailed spreadsheet with about 80 people on it, telling me that none of these invitees were optional, and I had better invite all of them.”

Only around a dozen of these people were on the original guest list, and the demand for extra bodies at the wedding was enough to make the bride see red. She went on to say:

“She mentioned how they all had bought flights and booked hotels, even though they had never received invites. This kind of flew me into a blind rage. I called everyone and cancelled. We got married in a national park with our two best friends.”

As for how her mother-in-law reacted, the unnamed bride said:

“She kind of blanched and was visibly horrified when she realised that SHE would have to call everyone she invited and cancel on them because they weren’t a part of our formal guest list. Honestly, it felt really good to finally see her squirm for once.”

The original Reddit post has disappeared, perhaps because the story went viral and caused the woman’s mother-in-law to blanche further, but either way, but whatever happened, a good call was made.
