Blake Lively Used To Communicate With Ex-BF Leo DiCaprio In The Weirdest Way

Earlier today, Vanity Fair published its monster reflection piece on the cultural phenomenon that was Gossip Girl, to mark ten years since the series first aired.

In amongst a million little tidbits from the cast and crew, it emerged that GG star Blake Lively, who played #blessed It girl Serena van der Woodsen, used to communicate with then-boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio in a way that almost predicted the rise of Instagram and Snapchat.

From Vanity Fair:

Lively asked for the show to shift production to Los Angeles while she filmed the 2012 movie Savages, directed by Oliver Stone. She began dating Leonardo DiCaprio, which also—inadvertently, thanks to her innovative means of communication with the actor—came to influence the content of the show itself. “We learned a lot from Blake,” [executive producer John] Safran said. “When I think about shooting the L.A. episodes, Blake was dating [DiCaprio] at the time, and she had this thing where she had a doll that she took photos of that she sent to Leo. Blake was way ahead of the curve. It was pre-Instagram. She was documenting her life in photographs in a way that people were not yet doing.”

Gossip Girl pre-dated both Instagram and Snapchat, and launched well before Facebook and Twitter grabbed a stranglehold on our lives, yet the very premise of the show – of the internet being used to document the aspirational lives of the rich and beautiful – foretold what would become the norm in just a few short years.

And to think that Blake sending Leo pictures of some weird-ass doll had something to do with that.

Blake – I’m gonna need to see a picture of this doll.
