‘Big Little Lies’ Author Liane Moriarty Hints That Season 2 Might Be A Goer

Don’t worry, this post is spoiler-free.

In case you and every one around you has been living in an internet-free void, HBO‘s drama ‘Big Little Lies‘ has taken the public by storm. In that sense, it’s a bit like ‘Westworld‘, except instead of violence, rape, and cowboy-themed robots, it’s about violence, rape, and domestic life under the California sun.

One week on from the earth-shattering finale, and questions are already being raised about season two. The novel of the same name on which it’s based doesn’t have the material for season two (i.e. a sequel), but stars Reese Witherspoon (who also produced) and Laura Dern have indicated they’d be hella keen to keep this good thing going. Director Jean-Marc ValléeNot so much. Neither, reportedly, is HBO.

However, season two might be closer than you think.

Author Liane Moriarty – who, y’know, wrote the damn thing – indicated that parts of her novel were never explored in the series, leaving possibilities open for season two.

Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) had an entire backstory about an abusive father, which explained why she reacted so strongly to events in the final school trivia night scenes. Her backstory was hinted at, but never fully realised on the little screen, for reasons Moriarty says she has no idea why.

Speaking exclusively to the Sydney Morning Herald, she said:

“My original reaction was what have they done? How have they left that out?,” she says. “But a lot of people have said that they could tell [what was Bonnie’s true story], there had been little hints and that you can take that away. It’s implied in her performances and some little lines. I think I might have preferred to have had it in there but I wouldn’t argue against it either. It also leaves open the possibility of season two.”

Consider us signed the fuck up.
