Meanwhile, Our New ‘Big Brother’ Housemates Have No Idea About The COVID-19 Pandemic

Big Brother

As Australia battles the coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19, there is at least one place in the entire country that is, to its very core, business as usual. The answer? The Big Brother House.

The new season of Big Brother is currently in production over in Sydney’s North Head. According to The Australian’s Media Diary, which gives me big Gossip Girl vibes, this year’s Big Brother stars were locked in the house three weeks ago without any access to their phones / the outside world. In other words, they’re “blissfully unaware” of just how bad the coronavirus has gotten, like how COVID-19 was officially declared a pandemic four days ago. They’re self-isolating for a completely different reason.

I like to think the show’s network, Seven, would’ve told them though… right?

The Oz’s Diary added that the house even has “unlimited access” to toilet paper. Ha.

Though the events of the current season are under lock and key, Big Brother Canada might give us an idea of how things might pan out. Last week, the Canadian version of the show binned its studio audience in a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19.

Season 8 of the Canadian Big Brother kicked off on March 4, before the severity of the virus really made itself known in the country.

In a clip doing the rounds on social media and YouTube, the contestants in the house can be heard discussing why there are empty seats in the studio and why they couldn’t hear the audience.

They might just be catching on to it.

In normal scenes, people on Twitter compared the clip to Dead Set. If you’re unfamiliar with the title, it’s a 2008 horror series by Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker, which should preface the synopsis. Dead Set focuses on the housemates of a fictional Big Brother series, who are completely unaware that a zombie apocalypse is occurring outside the Big Brother House. Yep.

Seven has yet to announce an official release date for Big Brother Australia, but we’ll keep you updated.
