Ben Affleck Opens Up About Struggles With Alcoholism To Help Fight Stigma

Ben Affleck has revealed he recently completed treatment for alcohol addiction, opening up about his struggles with alcoholism in a bid to help fight stigma associated with the illness.

In an unusually personal message posted to his Facebook page, he wrote:

“I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront.

“I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.

“I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen [Jennifer Garner], who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.”

He and Garner split up in 2015 after ten years of marriage, but remain on good terms and have yet to divorce.

It’s not the first time the 44-year-old actor has been to rehab. In a cover interview with the Hollywood Reporter in 2012 (during the Oscars lead-up for the insanely good hostage / escape drama ‘Argo‘, which he directed), he revealed he’d completed a stint in 2011.

“I went to rehab for being 29 and partying too much and not having a lot of boundaries and to clear my head and try to get some idea of who I wanted to be,” he said.

Good onya mate for being so open about it, tbh.
