Barb From ‘Stranger Things’ Would Like To Play Marvel Heroine Squirrel Girl Next

Poor, tragic mom jeans-wearing Barb was the breakout character from Stranger Things – we were Barb, and she was all of us – and since the show appeared on Netflix, actress Shannon Purser has developed a cult following.
Barb was Purser’s first acting role, and speaking to the New York Times about her huge and unexpected popularity with Stranger Things fans, she said:
“I think they admired her for not wanting to please others too much, and for being an honest and loyal friend.

Everybody has had that experience where your friend drags you to a party because the person they’re crushing on is there, and you don’t really want to be there but you go there with them anyway. Everybody has been a third wheel, and Barb is a wonderful, nerdy third wheel. People really relate to her and her outcast, left-out position because everybody’s felt that way at some point.”

In an interview with Revelist, Purser, an avid comic book fan, was asked about the role she’d love to play next, and she responded that she’d love to take a crack at Marvel‘s Squirrel Girl.

Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green, first appeared in Marvel comics in the early ’90s, and her ability to communicate with squirrels has time and again proved surprisingly effective in taking down supervillains.
Purser said of the part:

“I think Squirrel Girl is just adorable but at the same time is totally boss and completely awesome. I think people need a character like that. It’s easy in the superhero realm to feel like a lot of the female superheroes we see are grown women who are super responsible and know what their purpose is and that kind of thing. Squirrel Girl is a little bit younger and like a real person, trying to figure out her life and then also having to save the world. I love that.”
While we can totally see her in the role, she may have some competition from Anna Kendrick, who has also expressed an interest in playing Squirrel Girl, and was recently endorsed for the part by Ant Man director Edgar Wright.
Can we somehow have them both? This is too hard.
