“The lady doth protest too much, methinks” was probably a sick burn at the time that Shakespeare wrote it as a line of dialogue in Hamlet, but is now largely just a phrase blurted out by the most obnoxious people alive at the worst possible times. Still, it captured something, the tendency of people to go far in the other direction when trying to lie about something. Like, say, if you’re Abbie on The Bachelor, and you’re trying so, so hard to convince people that you’re an honest person.

You could play it low-key. “Yeah nah, not much of a liar, hey.” That’s not too bad. Or you could try and way, way oversell it, like, “I am the most honest person I know. Couldn’t possibly lie. The part of the human brain that allows you to lie is missing from mine. I’m actually allergic to lies. I don’t even know how to spell the word. What does it mean? Is it Danish?”
This is more or less what happened in tonight’s ep, and people were, frankly, not at all buying it.
