According to VarietyThe Farewell now has the biggest per-theatre box office average this year.

Okay, yes The Farewell opened in just four North American theatres over the weekend and Endgame opened across [checks notes] 4,662 so, uh, yeah. BUT, it’s still being counted as an official win so I’ll take it.

The way this works is: The Farewell reportedly made USD$351,330 across New York’s AMC Lincoln Square theatre and the Angelika, and Los Angeles’ ArcLight Cinemas and The Landmark theatre. So, that’s an average of USD$87,833 from each location. By comparison, Endgame made USD$76,601. And just like that, The Farewell takes the No.1 spot. I doubt the Russo Brothers would be too upset though… considering just how many box office records Endgame dusted.

Box office opening weekend wise, Endgame still absolutely, absolutely, absolutely x 10 obliterated The Farewell.

From writer / director Lulu WangThe Farewell tells the story of a headstrong Chinese-American woman named Billi (Awkwafina) who returns to China to see her beloved grandmother. The thing is, grandma’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer and her family has decided not to tell her about her own illness. Instead, they stage an impromptu wedding so everyone can see grandma one last time.

At the time of writing, The Farewell is 100 per cent Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes based off of 91 critic reviews. The audience also appeared to froth it, scoring it 97 per cent.

The Rolling Stone described the film as “extraordinary on every level” and rated it 4.5/5 stars.

The Farewell starring an award-calibre Awkwafina builds a funny, touching and vital film about what makes a family in any culture, leaving you with cathartic tears.”

The Farewell hits Aussie cinemas, September 5.

Fun fact: Lulu Wang is dating Barry Jenkins, the director of Moonlight so they are quite the power couple.
