‘Infinity War’ Writers Reveal Who Is Getting The Focus In The Next Movie

The next Avengers movie is landing in under a year, so we’re not going to have to wait long to find out exactly how all of those extremely marketable superheroes are coming back from their grace to destroy Thanos, and then appear in multiple highly profitable sequels. But if you’re feeling nonetheless obligated to scrounge through the internet to find any spoilers you can get your grubby little fingers on, wonderful news: the writers of the film have divulged a few little tidbits in a new interview.

Speaking to the New York Times, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely dug deep into the process of writing Infinity War, and what that might mean for Avengers 4. Interestingly, they say that the famous ‘snap’ – when Thanos clicked his fingers and instantly murdered half of the universe – could have ended up in Avengers 4. They decided to make it the climax / ending of Infinity War instead, and I think we can all agree it turned out as a nice little cliffhanger.

(Imagine if they’d ended it before the snap. That would also have been a cliffhanger, but a tremendously shithouse one with no sense of emotional resonance. They made the right call.)

But they revealed something which might reassure fans who weren’t entirely satisfied with the character beats of Infinity War. As you might recall, neither Captain America nor Black Widow had particularly large roles in the first part of this saga – with Cap not even showing up until the final act, and Black Widow running with a very, very lean role. Fans are a little starved for more Black Widow – especially with rumours of a standalone film which have failed to eventuate at this point.

In the interview, Markus and McFeely confirm that both characters will be getting their due in the next instalment:

Though Marvel didn’t mandate any story or character arcs, Mr. Markus said, “we’re never writing without knowing where the end goes.” For instance, Captain America and Black Widow mainly defend Earth in “Infinity War,” but they “have a much bigger role to play in that second film.” In Mr. McFeely’s words, “We gave ourselves license to pay off later.”

It’s obviously unsurprising, given the fact that a large number of other characters have literally evaporated, but it’s good to get some confirmation that these two are going to have their arcs explored more fully.
