The beautiful film, starring Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, received multiple awards including the Academy Award for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay, the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead (Chalamet), the New York Critics Circle Award for Best Actor (Chalamet), and the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Chalamet was also nominated for a Best Actor Award at the 2018 Academy Awards while the film received a nomination for Best Picture.

Awards aside, the film also undoubtedly propelled Chalamet into the hearts of millions so a sequel seeing him reprise the role of Elio Perlman would be just peachy.

Hammer, who plays Oliver in the movie was at the Toronto International Film Festival promoting his new film, Hotel Mumbai when he was asked about the sequel.

“It will happen because there are already people working on it and trying to make it happen,” the 32-year-old told Variety. And even though he “knows a lot” about the sequel he’s been sworn to absolute secrecy. All he could really say is that he’s absolutely on board.

As far as we know, director Luca Guadagnino told The Hollywood Reporter way back in January that he did have a plan for the sequel since the original book by André Aciman has an epilogue which suggests a continuation of their story. The epilogue chronicles the later years of Elio and Oliver’s lives as Elio visit the now-married Oliver in the United States 15 years after their intense love affair. Following these events, Oliver returns to Italy after learning Elio’s father died.

“…maybe the next chapter will be, what is the position of the young man in the world, what does he want — and what is left a few years later of such an emotional punch that made him who he is?” Guadagnino said.

The director also said he’d like the sequel to focus on the AIDS epidemic during the early ’90s.

Time will only tell if Guadagnino will stick to this plan or not.

Until then, prepare yourself for another kick-in-your-heart lovestory.

… while we’re all here…

MMMMMM.
