This Ariana Grande Stan & Native American Explains Why Her Deleted Insta Just Isn’t It

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande has been accused of mocking Native American singing and dancing in a since-deleted Instagram story that has spread like wildfire elsewhere.

The clip was originally posted on her husband Dalton Gomez‘s Instagram story, which Grande then shared on her own account.

The black and white clip seems to show Gomez and a few of his friends dancing in a circle, chanting in a ceremonial way and laughing. One person, who appears to be wearing some sort of head piece, is beating a drum. A woman who looks like Grande sits in the middle and sings, her arms in the air.

“Mood today,” Grande captioned the video.

It is believed the video was filmed at an escape room in Los Angeles, where participants had to “summon a spirit” to make it to the next stage of the game.

The clip has infuriated Native Americans who say it is a blatant show of ignorance and racism, with many expressing their anger on Twitter.

A fan named Steven Thompson-Oakes shared a lengthy statement to his Instagram explaining why the video is so disappointing to see.

“I have to be one of your #1 Indigenous fans and the Water Protector who you let speak to your audience, at your Dangerous Woman pre-show,” Thompson-Oakes wrote.

“The disrespect viewed in that video has made it clear, you all need to be educated on us Indigenous peoples and the diverse philosophy, ceremonies, languages, stories, and overall worldview each nation has and continue to preserve and revitalise.”

“We are still here, still singing our songs, dancing to those songs, and preserving our culture that our ancestors did long ago, even when they were targeted and criminalised for it.”

Thompson-Oakes described the video as harmful and extremely disrespectful, explaining that it normalises the ignorance and discrimination faced by Indigenous communities.

He urged Grande to educate herself and be a better ally to the Onkwehonwe (Original People) of the lands. And in particular, he asked for her support in raising awareness for the hundreds of unmarked graves found at boarding schools across Canada that once housed Indigenous children.

At the time of writing, Grande has not addressed the criticism she has received. Her most recent post on Instagram is a photoshoot she did to promote her new fragrance, named after her song ‘God Is A Woman’.
