AMC Circles Goodfellas TV Series

Over the past few years, reports have suggested that a Goodfellas series would happen pending the involvement of its creators. The Best Picture nominee was directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Nicholas Pileggi (based on his own gangster tell all Wiseguy), and while Marty has since offered his talents to HBO drama Boardwalk Empire, Pileggi has set his sights on another premium cable network engineered to win Emmy awards.

Deadline reports that the show is currently in development at AMC whose experience with period dramas (Mad Men) and spontaneous bursts of violence (Breaking Bad) makes them the perfect place to incubate the project. Let’s just ignore the fact that they’ve botched promising adaptations before (The Killing) and place our faith in them.

Details are scant at the moment but Pileggi will co-write the script with Jorge Zamacona (Homicide: Life on the Street) and both will produce the series alongside the film’s original producer Irwin Winkler and his son David Winkler.

It is not yet known when the series will take place but prognosticators suggest two logical starting points: Henry’s time in witness protection (where we predict a steep rise in boredom and cocaine use) or a prequel which covers his rapid rise through the Lucchese crime family.

We’d watch either.
