Sonic the Hedgehog fans are going into meltdown after an alleged leak of what the blue fella might look like in his upcoming live-action movie surfaced online via the Resetera forums. According to the post, the images appeared in what looks to be a style guide for the character.
The images were allegedly taken from the website of a company named HC Associates, which works on branding and packaging for a variety of entertainment clients. Looking into the site shows previous clients like Disney, EA, Activision, and more. While the Resetera thread provides a link to the site, it seems like the Sonic content has since been removed.
Luckily for you, the images and copy were posted by the user DemonCarnotaur, and again by AlexFlame116. You can have a look at them below.
I guess, uh, that’s him. According to the blurb that was allegedly on the website, these images are mock-ups of marketing material for the movie for things like toys and packaging. You can read it in full below.
You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the world who isn’t familiar with SEGA’s beloved IP, Sonic the Hedgehog. But global reverence does come with a unique price. In creating a licensing and packaging program to be used worldwide and to be applied against targeting multiple audience demographics, it was necessary to strike a balance between staying true to the Sonic brand, while appealing to a global audience, and differentiating from previous Sonic merchandise packaging.
The challenge of creating a global licensing and packaging program targeted to multiple demographics came with several strategic requirements: 1) signal a new modern take on the brand without abandoning its core essence, 2) appeal to a worldwide audience and 3) clearly differentiate from previous merchandising efforts.
Our approach was to create a system that was versatile and modular, so that various Sonic IPs including Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, Film Sonic, Animation Sonic, and other events couldbe integratingintegrate seamlessly within the baseline packaging look.

It sure sounds legit, but nothing’s confirmed just yet, so we’ll have to wait and see. HC Associates wouldn’t have designed the character, rather, they were likely given a bunch of film assets to organise into unique branding.
In terms of what fans reckon, well, some don’t mind it and some absolutely loathe it.
I mean it could’ve been worse. Probably much worse.

Honestly, this doesn’t look bad. It’s very weird, but I don’t think it’s bad.

It’s not the worst design in the world (it could’ve been much MUCH worse)… but what the hell is this?

It’s still not good though.

“If you feel like you’re speeding through your day, ask your doctor about Sonic. Side effects may include loss of vision, loss of hearing, loss of motor functions, and death. Sonic should not be taken with other medications” pic.twitter.com/7vYLnryLrl

Before you criticise the new Sonic, please understand that Christian Bale had to undergo hundreds of hours of surgery to look like this pic.twitter.com/WYRE1ERAAi

At the end of the day, I tend to agree with half of the fans: it could have been a lot worse.
