All The Plot Deets For The Surreal-As-Hell Return Of ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’

For a brief moment there, kid’s cartoons packed some genuinely surreal elements. Without delving too deep into “only 90s kids will remember this” territory, shows like The Ren & Stimpy Show, Cow And Chicken, and even early SpongeBob SquarePants were all pretty capable of extreme weirdness.

Still, no show quite captured desolate oddness and isolation quite like Rocko’s Modern Life, a cartoon which was framed around a wallaby lost in an American pastel-blasted wasteland.

For that reason, we’re feeling pretty bloody chuffed at Nickelodeon’s announcement that one-hour TV special Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling is in the works. We’re not sure there’s been a better time to revive a show about an Australian navigating an increasingly fucked world.
The show’s original voice cast will be returning for the special, which boasts an impossibly apt plot-line:

“Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling brings the characters back to Earth after being lost in outer space since 1996. Rocko has trouble accepting this 21st century modern life, while Heffer and Filburt embrace every aspect of new technology, social media and the endless diversity of food trucks.  Rocko whole-heartedly believes that his nostalgia for the past can save him from the tortures of the modern world.”
YEP. Not only will we be watching a beloved show from our childhoods, it’ll riff on watching beloved shows from our childhoods. Plus, it’s now canon that Really Really Big Man and The Bigheads have spent twenty years orbiting Earth. Grouse.

Expect this rich meta-text to drop in 2018.
