Aldi’s Big Boss Says Online Shopping Is In Its Future So I Can Buy My Cask Wine W/O Judgement

Aldi

If you weren’t already terribly addicted to Aldi bargains, the supermarket’s big boss said there are plans in Aldi’s future to move into the online space. We don’t know when, but God help us when the day comes.

Speaking to News Corp on Tuesday, chief executive officer Tom Daunt said that “Aldi’s future in Australia will include eCommerce.”

He added that when the day comes, they’ll probably kick things off with making alcohol and its much beloved Special Buys program available online. After that? Groceries, maybe!

“We are likely to start with something more exciting like wine or Special Buys online before we would entertain a full grocery offer.”

Right now, you can’t actually buy anything online. The company previously told News Corp in 2018 that it had no plans to set up an online shopping website, or something like click and collect.

At the time, Aldi said it was focusing on giving the “best possible in-store experience.”

Porque no los dos, I say.

In a statement to PEDESTRIAN.TV, Aldi confirmed it wasn’t about to dip its big toe in the online pool just yet.

“As our CEO Tom Daunt mentioned today, it is inevitable that eCommerce will be part of our future,” an Aldi spokesperson said.

“Everything we do, we do with our ‘Good Different’ approach to business, so as we look at how we bring this to Aldi shoppers, we’ll ensure this doesn’t compromise our ability to give customers exceptional value on high quality items.”

While many would absolutely froth the opportunity to buy a Special Buys item online, there is something rather thrilling about racing around town to different Aldi stores in search of a very cool steamboat/grill hybrid for the Lunar New Year.

It took us four Aldi stores and two days, but we got there. Gooood times.

Anyway, you can suss out the supermarket’s stacked catalogue online. We’ll let you know when/if Aldi drops any updates on an online store.

P.S. The Aldi Special Buys for Saturday, 27 March includes a very luxe pet range.
