2010 Logie Nominations – Alf Stewart To Win

The 2010 Logie Nominations are in, and before we discuss them, let’s just acknowledge what a shame it is that the primary awards ceremony in Australia that recognises excellence in television is generally considered a bit of a joke. I mean, the distribution of the top awards is placed in the hands of the general public and – I don’t mean to generalise – but the general public are generally stupid.

Case in point: Lisa McCune won four Gold Logies as the Most Popular Personality on TV. And she’s really only ever been on one television program. I don’t think Sea Patrol counts.

The Logies also tend to make it painfully obvious that Television Drama is a section of the industry that is seriously suffering – because the quality programs just aren’t getting viewers. – When the Most Popular Drama Series nominees include ‘Home And Away’ (Channel Seven) and ‘Neighbours’ (Network Ten) you can’t help but think that the situation is pretty desperate.

The Circuit SBS’s artful and compelling – but little-watched – drama really deserves a large audience but has no chance of getting one while suffering the limitations of the SBS advertising budget / the low quality viewing preferences of the GP (General Public).

So, to the major award: THE GOLD LOGIE. And the nominees are:

GOLD LOGIE – Most Popular Personality on TV

Esther Anderson (Home And Away, Channel Seven)

Thoughts: WHO? I haven’t watched ‘Home And Away’ since Bobby died. It’s good to hear that Marilyn’s back though. Maz is to ‘Home And Away’ what Karen is to ‘Will And Grace’.

Wil Anderson (The Gruen Transfer, ABC1)

Thoughts: Hope he wins because has such a mega chip on shoulder about becoming “popular” that Wil’s shame will be too delicious for words. Congratulations Anderson: the General Public like you. Sucker.

Rebecca Gibney (Packed To The Rafters, Channel Seven)

Thoughts: Credit where credit’s due – Gibbers is an industry main player and has done some quality work. But ‘Packed To The Rafters’? There’s something about the “lighthearted comedy” combo of old people having comical sex, youthful colourful-shirt types getting into whacky locked-out-of-the-house-naked situations and a Jason Mraz soundtrack that is quite nauseating.

Adam Hills (Spicks And Specks, ABC1)

Thoughts: You’ve got to hand it to Adam Hills – he’s just got that likable ‘shrugging geek’ schtick down to a fine art. No chance though – how many people watch Spicks And Specks compared to Packed To The Rafters?

Paul McDermott (Good News Week, Network Ten)

Thoughts: Ha ha. Paul McDermott.

Ray Meagher (Home And Away, Channel Seven)

Thoughts: GO ALF GO!
Once a friend saw Alf in the street and they went up and said “ALF! High-five?” And he high-fived them and said “you bloody beauty!” Ergo, Ray Meagher is actually a cheerier, drunker version of Alf Stewart.

Rove McManus (Rove/Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?, Network Ten)

Thoughts: Bor-ring. And you lost us when you interviewed your new wife on the show. Tres disgusting!

Shaun Micallef (Talkin Bout Your Generation, Network Ten)

Thoughts: Probably too absurd and high brow for GP.
