We always assume that Disney movies are tailored to kids or anyone who can’t legally drink but, as we grow older, we realise that we rely on them even more than we did when we were younger.
For example, when you find yourself sitting in your jocks on the couch, consuming copious amounts of plastic cheese and reeling from a break-up, where are you likely to turn? Disney. When you’re feeling sorry for yourself because your bank account took an absolute flogging the night before, what do you watch?
You get the gist.
So, seeing as Disney is our forever partner, here are some particularly inspirational quotes from our Disney Princesses that’ll get everyone – young and old – thinking about life just that little differently.
1. “You think the only people who are people, are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you’ll learn things you never knew.” – Pocahontas
Okay, this is defo a line that’ll hit adults harder than it will children. Or perhaps I’ve just forgotten what it was like to be a kid so I’m underestimating them completely.
Regardless, the message Pocahontas sends is a goodie – by surrounding ourselves with different people with different stories, we’re bound to become more empathetic as a whole.
2. “Really, you don’t need someone to complete you. You only need someone to completely accept you.” – Rapunzel
Bless Rapunzel, arguably the first Disney princess to basically tell the world that a partner isn’t a requirement if you want a good life.
And most of us have friends who completely accept who we are anyway, otherwise they wouldn’t hang out with us. Partners – who needs ’em.
3. “The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work” – Tiana
While some of us may shudder at the idea of hard work, Tiana makes a good point. The 1% excluded, most of us have to hustle our asses off to get to the places we want to go.
There does however happen to be a loophole for those allergic to hard work – just don’t aim that high. It’s hard to be disappointed if your goal in life is to shack up with your folks until you die.
4. “Our fate lives within us… you only have to be brave enough to see it.” – Merida
What Merida‘s getting at here is essentially a version of creating your own destiny. Some people believe in fate, that’s cool, but if fate means I’m going to wake up in an abandoned warehouse with no idea how I got there, I’d like to manually override my fate and create my own, thanks.
Make good decisions.
5. “Reflect before you snack.” – Mulan
Damn it Mulan, stop attacking my way of life.
Genuinely though, if you’re sneaking downstairs at 4am to eat half of that cheeseburger your roommate threw in the bin earlier that day, just stop, reflect and ask yourself if it’s worth it.
Short answer: it’s always worth it. Get that bin burger you cheeky bugger.
