Lockdown is no fun. To make the most of a boring situation, Russians have begun recreating classic artworks in the confines of their own homes, and the results are pretty damn wild.
On March 30, a Facebook group dedicated to the trend called Изоизоляция, or “Isolation”, popped up. In just over a week it’s already accumulated 250,000 members.
Using themselves as models and whatever they have lying around the house as props, people began meticulously recreating the works of Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh and more.
By props, we of course mean using a carrot as a big ol’ peen in the name of ART. This is what it means to be cultured. Don’t say a word otherwise.
Dicks aside, the group in general is wholesome as fuck. Posts often get thousands of likes within an hour of being posted, and the comments sections are full of old Russian ladies hyping everyone up with emojis.
Ordinary people are publicly engaging with art that would otherwise be the domain of snobs in fancy museums – a wholesome development you love to see during a global pandemic.
The group’s popularity has spawned a long list of rules, some of which are quite telling about what people try to submit.
“Please do not send photos of your children/cats/dogs without a suitable picture of the surroundings/props,” the group’s description says.
“We also love children and cats, but the group has other goals.”
By “other goals”, they must mean bringing to life surrealist hellscapes in which you can almost hear the models scream “HELP”, such as the one below.
The trend has also spread to other platforms including to Instagram with the hashtag #изоизоляция.
