Now that we’re all stuck inside for this very weird and lonely time with absolutely no mosh pits to get stuck into for the foreseeable future, Brisbane-based rehearsal and recording space Airlock Studios is gonna start releasing its own quarantine / isolation live gigs from April.
Taking cues from things like NPR’s Tiny Desk (a persona fave of mine omg) and Live On KEXP, the Brisbane studio space run by 1/5 of Powderfinger will kick off its own run of live gigs beamed straight to your lounge room from April 9.
Brissy local legends WAAX are slated as the first band to kick things off, and there’s one more band locked in for the Quarantine Sessions gigs in April. No word on who that is just yet but we’ll let you know when we find out.
The Quarantine Sessions gigs will run for three months, focusing in on supporting and championing Brisbane-based artists and bands and its live music scene, which has taken a battering from the coronavirus pandemic, alongside the wider Aussie music industry.
All of the filmed and aired live gigs will go for anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes, and the best part is that you 1. don’t have to go outside or get changed out of your pjs to enjoy it and 2. you can choose your own set times.
One thing I’ve realised is that a gig that ends before midnight is a god damned blessing in disguise. And now that we’re all going online, you can absolutely do that. Hell, tune in FROM bed if you really want to. No rules in self-isolation, baby!
Alongside the performance for the quarantine gigs, there will be lots of behind-the-scenes goodies for you to watch as well. So if you’ve ever wanted to know what a soundcheck or a green room looks like, what bands do before they step out onto the stage, what weird rituals and superstitions they have pre-gig, now you can get that peek behind the curtain.
