Uber Has, No Joke, Started scUber For Submarine Rides At The Barrier Reef

Well, here’s something I didn’t expect to be writing today. Uber is doing submarine rides in the Great Barrier Reef as part of a service dubbed scUber.

Partnering with Tourism and Events Queensland, the idea is to offer folks a bucket list-tier underwater experience to help support the ongoing protection and conservation of the reef. Not only will this show off the natural wonder in an incredibly unique way, but Uber will also be donating $100,000 to the organisation, along with the “equivalent value of every scUber ride taken,” its website says.

The rides will start on Heron Island from the 27th of May before moving along to Port Douglas where it’ll offer rides from the 9th of June through to the 18th. If you’re in the area, you’ll be able to book scUber rides using the Uber app for a cool $1,500 per person, with a minimum cost of $3,000 per ride, but includes a goddamn scenic helicopter transfer to and from mainland Queensland.

Each ride lasts around an hour, which is a pretty good amount of time to take in the sights of the reef, whether it’s fascinating coral or dope-looking fish. If the price is a little too steep for you, scUber’s giving away a free ride as part of a competition which you can enter here.

You can get an idea of how the ride looks in the video below.

Hell yeah, you’ll be finding all sorts of Nemos in that bad boy.

It’s great to see Uber back an organisation which is battling for the preservation of one of our greatest natural beauties. Hopefully, it takes off in a big way.
