How To Find A Direction In Life When You Have No Clue What You’re Doing

How To Find You're Direction When You're Totally Lost

You know that feeling when you finish high-school or feel stuck in your job, or at home without a job and you start getting sweaty palms like you’re right out of an 8 Mile song? It’s that cold shiver that comes from not knowing what you want to / should do with your life or career when it feels like everyone expects you to have a plan.

Well, damn the plan…I say as someone with absolutely no insight into your life or life-coach training. But seriously, we’ve all been there and you’ll work it out eventually but there are some things to do in the meantime to help yourself get there.

this owl is all of us.

Calm Ya Farm

Kids, (and I use this term loosely because people of literally every age sometimes have no clue what their life is), you just need to take a deep breath. It’s ok to not be able to map out your whole future right at this moment. Make a tea, punch a bag, binge-watch a mindless tv show…i’m going to stop with the examples before I give too much of my life away.

Join The Grind, Or Volunteer

You know what’s always great? Money. So even if you don’t have a career path just yet, get a job, or stay in the one you’re at. Whatever you end up deciding for your future, having a little bank behind you will make it easier.

Volunteering or interning in your spare time can also be a really great trial run for potential careers you may have in mind.

Get Out Of Town

Better yet, volunteer or work overseas. Or if you have the funds just get out dodge with nothing but your backpack and a pocketful of dreams. Apologies to your parents who now hate me but as an avid solo traveller, I cannot express enough how much I advocate it as a way to discover yourself (SO sorry to get all Eat, Pray, Love on you, but it’s true) and expand your horizons. If it doesn’t solve all your problems it will at least give you a rad new perspective on life.

Talk To People Who Do Have A Clue

Not me, I am not one of these people you should talk to. But there are plenty of people with real experience and insight who can give you a taste of what different careers might be like. Head to open weeks, have a Google, send emails. The best way to know what a career might be like is to ask about it and what you need to do to get yourself there.
