Where To Buy Natural Wine Around Australia, You Big Loveable Wanker

Like it or not, natural wine is taking off in Australia. If you’re not clued up on what natural wine actually is, here’s a refresher for you. But here’s Eddie Schweitzer from Vinomofo giving us the low-down.

“Basically, in layman’s terms, they are wines with nothing added and nothing taken away; no acid, sugar or tannin additions. There is little to no intervention, so it’s wine made the way nature allows it to be.”

Most people find that because nothing’s been added, natural wines are extremely drinkable. As in, you can glug ’em down easily, like a juice! Also, they come in fun colours like orange, and cold reds, and so on. Basically it’s all of us thinking we’re really high-brow drinking ~NaTuRaL WiNe~ but actually we are just big adult babies getting excited over alcoholic poppas. Sort of.

I say this with love – I too am I big natural wine fan. So I’ve rounded up the best spots around Australia to buy a bottle (or two) from.

SYDNEY

P&V MERCHANTS, ENMORE

For a while there – mainly because my boyfriend at the time was a total natural wine wankfest (I say this lovingly) I was a regular at this Enmore institution, so I can attest that a) the staff are lovely and super super helpful, never making you feel like an idiot for not knowing shit and b) they have a massive selection of natural wines, so many in fact that you’ll always go home with something new, even if you have your favourites.

THE OAK BARREL, SYDNEY CBD

This city-based store has been around since the ’50s, and stocks a great range of natural wines from around the world. They’ve also got an amazing array of whiskeys and craft beer, if that’s more your thing.

NATIVE DROPS, BONDI

Of COURSE Bondi has a natural wine store – Native Drops is catering to the East side set with their excellent selection of natty wine makers, and are always on hand to help you decide between their prods.

MELBOURNE

CULT OF THE VINE, BRUNSWICK

This Brunswick-based natural wine store is also a bar, which means if you’re not looking to buy bottles to take home, you can sit in and drink your pet nat with your mates. It also means you can properly try a few diff glasses, then pick the bottles up to take home.

BLACKHEARTS & SPARROWS, MELBOURNE-WIDE

The sibling-run bottle shop has stores around Melbourne (and Canberra, what’s up Braddon!). Known for their extensive selection of little-known winemakers and painstaking efforts to stock only the best, they’ve got a great selection of your natty wines.

ADELAIDE

EAST END CELLARS, ADELAIDE

This renowned bottle shop stocks a great range of your regular wines, and your natty wines. The staff and proprietor all have strong histories in fine wine appreciation, meaning you can ask for help and get high-qual advice.

PERTH

WINES OF WHILE, PERTH

The first natural wine store in Perth, Wines Of While is both a store and a bar, so once again – you can try your new drop before you commit to an entire bottle.

BRISBANE

CRAFT WINE STORE, RED HILL

These guys focus on small batch wine, beer and spirits – so if your interests in natural and kinda obscure wines extends into the beer/liquor areas, you can stock up on everything.

BLACK SHEEP BOTTLE SHOP, BRISBANE-WIDE

Black Sheep have a few locations across Brissie, and stock some killer natural wines as well as other smaller winemakers.

AUSTRALIA-WIDE

DRNKS, ONLINE

This online shop actually ships all over Oz, with relatively cheap shipping (10 bucks for Sydney Metro and Outer Metro). However, you can also score free shipping on orders over $100, so if you buy a few bottles, you’re laughing.

VINOMOFO

Aussie wine institution Vinomofo stock a few natural wines, but also offer a selection pack which takes all the hard work out of deciding, tbh.
