Vegans Are Beefing W/ QLD Meat-Lovers Over A New Butcher’s “Offensive” Name

Another day, another social media feud.
This time the biff is between customers of a Moreton Bay butcher and an assertive vegan activism group, Unapologetic Vegans Australia.
The Squealing Pig opened last week, offering a range of locally sourced – as much as possible – meat products.
Yeah, it’s a bit of a crass name, but y’know pigs do squeal. It is a noise they make when they are stoked, rolling in mud. And also, presumably, when they are slaughtered for food, as the vegan group has made very clear in the 83 one-star reviews they’ve posted on the butcher’s Facebook since Monday.

This group though are hardcore, describing themselves on Facebook as “abolitionist vegans who have no tolerance for carnist ways“.
Carnism, in case you are uneducated like me, apparently was coined by a vegan activist in 2001, to describe the ideology of people who think it is okay to enjoy Christmas ham.
Anywho, the group rally against meat-eaters (and also plain old vegetarians/pescatarians) and their “violent and sick lifestyles“. They are also anti horse riders, people who visit the zoo, and vegans who just aren’t up to scratch, i.e. people who wear secondhand animal products like leather, fur and wool.
The Squealing Pig’s owner Gary Thompson said he never meant to offend anyone:
I just thought it was a catchy name.
I don’t have anything against vegans, I respect their right to have an opinion, but they are putting people’s jobs and livelihoods at risk by trying to discredit our business.”
He has blocked “some of the really bad comments, calling me a ‘cruel man’ and a ‘sick bastard’”.

But his customers – and a group of meat-lovers – have come to the shop’s defence, posting rival five-star reviews, and heckling the vegans on the page mostly with pictures of meat.

And also with this frankly delightful meme:
That show of support (2.2K five-star reviews) means that The Squealing Pig are still rated 4.9/5 on Facebook, out of 2.3K reviews.
