At long last, all our vegan and lactose-intolerant mates can get in on arguments around how to perfectly prepare a hot and/or cold Milo (read: many heaped spoons, topped up with milk of choice, another spoonful to eat while you’re making it) with a new Plant-Based Milo popping up on shelves this week.
Our classic fave has entered the new decade with a whole new dairy-free alternative, which is pretty bloody huge if you ask me.
Pointed out by one of my vegan mates who literally got changed out of her PJs at about 11pm at night just to nip down to Coles in Melbourne’s north to grab a tin, the plant-based alternative to our beloved malted choccy Milo has kept its taste with the malt barley extracts, but swapped out the milk powders with a soy protein isolate and soluble corn fibre, as well as adding in some sunflower oil and oat flour.
Naturally, I had to grab a tin from the Coles around the corner from the office and give it a taste test – because it absolutely has to taste the same to be worth it at all. And as someone who used to eat Milo by any means possible; on ice cream, sprinkled on buttered bread, straight from the tin, I’m definitely more than qualified. Folks, I’m very happy to confirm that it tastes pretty much identical to the Good Stuff.
It’s the second spin on the classic fave that we’ve been given in the last six months, after Milo released a version of itself with 30% less added sugar in late 2019.
PEDESTRIAN.TV has reached out to Nestlé to get some more info about the new vegan Milo, and whether we get to keep it forever or not.
Tins of the plant-based Milo are available at Coles (but maybe not all of them, so check just in case) for $7 a pop, so alert all your mates who have been missing that precious bev because now they can absolutely get into it and go and go and go.
