‘Shoe-shi’ Combines Your Love Of Cheap Eats With Expensive Sneakers

Move over, meat dress – there’s a new food-as-clothing trend in town. As Theonigriart on Insta, illustrator Yujia Hu is posting up his small-scale sushi sneakers, which, yes, is sushi in the shape of sneakers.
But not just any sneakers: an avid shoe-wearer aka sneakerhead, Yujia’s recreating his favourite sneaker editions with painstaking attention to detail, from Air Jordans to Yeezy 350s, as below.

They’re teeny-tiny, so he’s mostly using tweezers to put everything in their right place, which is how you’ll find Nike’s Kyrie2 Tropical replicated down the spiral on the side. Luckily, sushi’s ingredients lend themselves to most sneaker colour palettes, which is a sentence I didn’t expect to write today. Salmon’s pink streaks even resemble sole marks and nori (dried seaweed) can be cut to any shape. It’s as if this was always what was meant to happen.
Like all good artists, Yuija plays homage to the greats too, like the Adidas Superstar.

Surely Nike and Adidas are furiously bidding over some sort of ad deal. These are insane. But if you scroll back far enough on Yuija’s ‘gram, it looks like this might be just a stage in his artistry – previously, he focused on portraiture – mostly of NBA stars. I’m not familiar enough to gauge their likeness, but judging by his Keanu Reeves, they’re pretty, impressive, pretty impressive.

On the odder side is this half-man, half-shoe, all-sushi portrait of Houston Rockets NBA player James Harden, but the transitional period is always a little awkward.

And how do they taste? Well, it feels a bit besides the point, but they’d probably be a bit lopsided with flavours – some bites would just be rice, some a whole lotta salmon. You can’t have it all. Here are some of our favourite pics, but be sure to chuck Yujia a follow on Insta, too. You can even buy some prints here, if you’re keen to dress up your walls.
