Mary’s Has Swung The Doors Open To Its First Grown-Up Restaurant In Syd

A while back we told you how the team from Mary’s had gotten their grubby mitts on the old Basement Underground venue in Sydney‘s CBD, where they planned to open up a ground-level spot of the iconic rock n’ roll burger bar, and revamp the downstairs space into a live gig spot and a fancy-as-fuck restaurant. Well, they’ve gone and bloody done it, and it’s now open to the masses.

Taking up the reins at 7 Macquarie Place, Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham – the co-founders of the metal-driven, debauchery-laden space out of Newtown – have melded the ethos of Mary’s together with the experience of high-quality dining. If there’s anything I can draw parallels with, it’d be the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood; renowned for being the place where celebrities can let their hair down a bit, but also boasts an impressive menu.

Think the raucousness of Frankie’s Pizza and the Newtown Mary’s space, but instead of a greasy, cheesy slice or heart-stoppingly rich burger, you can sit in a cosy, plush nook and tuck into a serve of Tathra Place duck liver parfait paired with cumquat & Cherry Moon bread, a lobster Australienne, and a couple of selections from the in-house clam bar. Or maybe go all out for your date and order the $300 seafood tower, with caviar added at your own leisure.

The wine list on offer is more of a novel, and with the team’s strong background through P&V Wines over in Enmore, you know your liver is in good hands – at least until the Jack Daniel’s shots come out, then it’s every person for themselves.

Mary’s Underground already has plans for its musical offerings, with the lineup for the remainder of May and into June leaning paying a respectable tribute to the venue’s former glory years of sultry and fuzzy jazz, with some Afro-Cuban, hip hop and soul thrown in for good measure.

Maybe as the city’s lockout laws have a potential end-date, we can apply the same advice to the revamped Sydney venue; If you’re going to get in trouble, do it at Mary’s Underground.

Doors open on Mary’s Underground from 5pm Monday through to Saturday, with weekends staying open till 3am so there’s ample time to get sauced and boogie on the table. Book a table through the Mary’s Underground website.
