Sunny’s Pizza Just Won A Cute $30K For Their Flamin’ Doritos Crackers Creation

Hear-ye, hear-ye! Come gather round one final time! The moment we’ve all been waiting for hath arrived.

Last week, we announced that chef prodigy Marika Shapiro had won the wildcard search for the best Doritos Crackers Pizza concoction, and that she would heading to the crowning event in Melbourne to re-make the pizza live against the other restaurants chefs in a bid for $30k.

How’d she do, you ask? Let’s find out… WELCOME TO THE WRAP UP.

On May 23, 7 entrants – Manny’s Pizza Diner from Sydney, Sunny’s Pizza from Adelaide, The Burrow from Brisbane, Lucy’s Love Shack from Perth, Connie’s and Homeslice Pizza from Melbourne, and our gal, Marika – descended upon Melbourne in the battle for the nation’s best Doritos Crackers pizza. I don’t mean to be cheesy, but everyone’s dishes were worthy of snatching the crown. I mean, cheezus crust, we wanted to hulk smash our faces into all of that goodness.

Will and Woody from KIIS and our very own PEDESTRIAN.TV music & culture editor Courtney Fry tasted each of the creations and, after a tough deliberation process, it was agreed upon that Ash and Jack from Sunny’s had the grand supreme, the crème de la crème, the numero uno Doritos Crackers pizza in the nation.

They now take home a crackin’ $30k for their hard-earned work. That’s amore.

Ash and Jack got a cold freight truck to drive up their ingredients from Adelaide, which is a huge dedication to the sesh. And their thoughts on the win? “It was sick, I’m hungover.”

Same. Head on over to our pre-comp coverage of Sunny’s to check out their winning dish:

As for Marika, she made a lasting impression on the judges.

“It was super impressive to see how much determination that Marika, the wildcard, had when put up against a bunch of regular slice slingers,” Courtney noted afterwards. “She curried a lot of favour from us judges for her presentation, and the way she managed to make a pull-apart bread be both fluffy and light, but also crunchy and sugar-glazed was amazing. Definitely in the top three for me.”

Kudos to Marika for also making her own uniform and pizza box for her “Do you Wanna Pizza Me” creation. Much respect.

Check out the gallery bellow for some fresh snaps taken last night, and scroll to the end for more winning portraits. Surely we’ve now started a trend now, right? Doritos Crackers belong on our pizza, followed by our bellies.

Special shout out to Connie’s for hosting the event and letting us use their kitchen. May the Doritos Crackers pizza live on forever more. Le fin.
