Brissy Surf Club Fined $37K For Ruining The Guts Of 29 People W/ Dodgy Mayo

South Bank Surf Club in Brisbane have been fined $37,000 at Brisbane Magistrates Court today for serving dodgy mayo in 2015, giving 29 people food poisoning.
The Club’s head chef at the time apparently made two salmonella-ridden batches of the mayo, the salmonella likely transferred from eggshells, which were served at the venue over the course of eight days.
Their lawyers pled guilty to 22 charges of serving unsafe food, but no conviction was recorded. On top of the $37K, the Club also has to front up about $2500 in legal costs.
After the incident, health authorities inspected the restaurant, which was closed for three weeks, causing a loss to the Club of an estimated $85,000.
One of the 29 victims was West Australian hockey player Kelli Reilly, who, one day before she was due to play in her masters hockey final, ate buffalo wings with aioli sauce. Innocuous, right? Maybe even delicious at the time?
Wrong.
Her team went on to win the tournament, sure, but Reilly was then hospitalised for three days, and has not been able to play hockey since. She is still affected by salmonella poisoning, and says she wont be eating aioli again.
A life without aioli: a real tragedy.
Reilly, outside of court, said that food poisoning of this scale “upsets your gut health quite chronically“:
I’ve been through a lot, I’d probably not like to comment on it all because it has impacted me a lot and my family.
I would not wish this on anybody.”
Still Bevan Bickle, one of the restaurant’s four directors, apologised to Reilly after the sentence, but offered no compensation. So that’s nice, I guess?
