Maddy Mercury Retrograde

Brace yourselves, chaos gremlins — Mercury Retrograde 2026 is back for round two, and it's the second of many hectic dates this year. Whether you’re a seasoned astrology truther or someone who only remembers retrogrades when your phone glitches and your ex resurfaces, this cosmic backspin has a way of making itself known. Expect crossed wires, tech tantrums, delayed plans and the sudden urge to revisit situations you thought were well and truly buried.

But before you blame every minor inconvenience on the universe conspiring against you, it’s worth remembering that Mercury Retrograde isn’t just about drama, it’s about reflection, recalibration and, yes, the occasional reality check. In a year already packed with big energetic shifts, the 2026 retrograde cycles are less about ruining your life and more about forcing you to slow down, rethink and actually read the fine print (both literally and emotionally). So if things feel slightly off, nostalgic or just plain chaotic, you’re not imagining it, you’re just syncing up with one of astrology’s most notorious plot twists... not to mention Eclipse Season!

Mercury Retrograde 2026 dates

There are three Mercury Retrograde periods in 2026, here's when to look out for:

First Retrograde
February 26-March 20, 2026
Second Retrograde June 29-July 23, 2026
Third Retrograde October 24-November 13, 2026

What does the June / July period mean?

June/July's Mercury Retrograde lands in Cancer, and the vibe is emotional audit. This particular Mercury retrograde is trading the usual lost keys and broken emails for some major emotional weight. You won't be able to keep dissociating from your emotions; you'll need to face them head-on in order to move on.

When Mercury backs up through Cancer, it acts like a flashlight pointed at our past, our childhood patterns, and our current support systems, so don't be surprised if old memories, past relationships, or unresolved family dynamics suddenly knock on your door. This retrograde will force you to ask yourself, 'Are my boundaries keeping me safe, or are they just walls keeping me isolated?'

There is a silver lining around July 12, though. This is the day Mercury aligns perfectly with the sun in an event called a Cazimi.

In astrology, this is considered the "heart of the Sun," a brief window of intense clarity amidst the retrograde fog. If you've been feeling confused, passive-aggressive, or stuck in an emotional loop, July 12 is the day things will likely "click," and you'll be able to start moving forward.

While water-sign retrogrades can leave you with a bit of an emotional hangover, they ultimately lead to so much healing -- if you let them.

What should I do during Mercury Retrograde in Cancer for protection? Any spells or rituals?

The prescription for this retrograde is actually pretty simple: audit your inner world. Take an honest look at your relationships with work, friends, family and partners, and notice where your energy is flowing versus where it’s quietly leaking.

This isn’t about spiralling or overthinking your way out of problems. With Cancer in the mix, it’s about feeling your way through them. If frustration, emotional heaviness or exhaustion keeps bubbling up, don’t ignore it, it’s data.

If you’re already burnt out, consider this your cosmic cue to slow down and assess what’s draining you. More often than not, it comes back to boundaries (or lack thereof). Where are you overextending? Being too available? Absorbing other people’s emotions at the expense of your own?

Pay extra attention to where your empathy might be getting taken for granted. Cancer's energy is deeply giving, which can easily slip into becoming everyone’s emotional support system, at home or at work. If you’re constantly taking on more, volunteering first or carrying the emotional load for everyone else, it might be time to step back and let others meet you halfway.

Use this retrograde as a sacred pause to reinforce your foundations. What do you actually need to function at your best? More support, more rest, firmer boundaries, less emotional labour? The clearer you get now, the easier it’ll be to move forward without running on empty when the pace picks back up.
