Meet Tavi. She is the fashion obsessed blogger behind Style Rookie which isn't that big of a deal considering fashion blogs and their bloggers are as web ubiquitous as snobby music aficionados, American Apparel banner advertisements, and porn (Though American Apparel ads have almost made the latter redundant).
What is notable about Tavi however, is that she is twelve years old. Yep, twelve years old. At twelve I was bereft of any characteristic that could in any way be deemed cool, especially a sense of style. I would rather spend my days pretending I was fighting shit or sniffing glue. Tavi on the other hand, is as culturally aware as someone a decade her senior, just read her blog bio below...
"Salutations! I'm a vertically challenged 12 year old that could fit inside your purse. I like to think I'm a mix of Little Lu Lu and Iggy Pop, with a bit of Snoop Doggy Dog. I spend my time wearing out crayons and watching Arthur, and taking a rest now and then to try out the latest Margiela DIY, which has most recently resulted in a tire around my neck. I take part in a rap group with a pirate, and we write about Japanese designers and furry vests. Pleasure to make your acquaintance."
Not only that, but her blog itself is well written. It is conversational (interspersed with the odd swear word) without ever being sloppy, a plethora of pop culture references thrown in for good measure. If her blog is completely of her own volition and she is the sole force at work, I must give this girl props. At twelve she's got alright photoshop skills, writing skills, knows hot to use a camera, knows how to blog, and has decent music and fashion knowledge, and a legitimate love of pop culture (in her blog she references everyone from Sigmund Freud, Agyness Deyn, Deborah Harry and Dharma and Greg).
I like to call this Generation 2.0.
A clear successor to Generation Y, Generation 2.0 represents a generation that is more narcissistic and tech saavy then ever before. They devour media relentlessly, have a faster maturation curve, and through the internet adopt trends quicker and socialize like adults. OK I made all of that up and don't have any facts to back it up, but damn! How cool are little kids becoming? Seriously stop it, you're making me look bad! What's next 8 year old DJs? Wait, that's already been done...
