In an interview with The Herald Sun, Sneaky Soundsystem bassist/keyboardist Donnie Sloan who also produces under his own name is reported to have had to fight to gain writing, performing and producing credits on the tracks he helped pen for Empire of the Sun We Are The People, Walking on a Dream, Half Mast and Without You.

The Herald Sun used the following quotes from Sloan in their article:

"I created these tracks, on my own in 2005, long before EOTS existed...Musically, the template for EOTS is mine. They pulled the rug from under my feet and took my sound." Sloan said. "I told Nick I didn't want him to use the tracks. I was hoping to save them for my own project,"

"They were trying to copy and recreate my music,"

"This would have, in effect, left me with nothing. So my hand was forced into allowing them to use the backing tracks."

"I had to threaten it in order for them to recognise my contribution. It has been a bittersweet experience. But I have worked hard to move on...I'm not bitter about it any more,"

"It's the hit I had to take to move to the next level.

"If I can capitalise on it then it's a blessing."

Shortly after The Herald Sun interview was published Sloan posted a blog titled "ME AND EMPIRE OF THE SUN" on his Myspace assuring fans he enjoyed a "great working relationship" with the band, harboured no resentment towards them and was excited to work on their second album:

"For anyone who may have read any recent press regarding my involvement with Empire Of The Sun I would like to make it absolutely clear that I am very happy with my credits and thank you on the album art. Any statements to the contrary have been taken out of context. I enjoy a great working relationship with Empire of the Sun and we're all very excited about continuing this especially in the form of the second Empire LP. - Donnie"

pretty hard to think someone would take "I created these tracks, on my own in 2005, long before EOTS existed...Musically, the template for EOTS is mine. They pulled the rug from under my feet and took my sound." out of context, sounds like someone had a cry and got told to shut up! maybe with a bag with a dollar symbol on it....

Someone with a big wallet or a big right hook has sorted this one out the old fashioned way methinks...

dave, obviously you do not produce anything creative as you seem to think that sloan "just had a cry". producing a song with a backing track that people actually like, like "walking on a dream", are extremely hard to create, which is why most people, like you, are brickies laborers and not musicians. to put it in a context you might understand - imagine if you built a brick wall and never got your invoice paid, then some other dude comes in and says he built it and is going to get paid for every dog it keeps off his lawn. you'd be pissed too. most people respect this and its littlemore and steele who are the assholes for not giving him the money he deserves. obviously he didnt want to take it that far but if you dont get paid for something you do for work your going to be pissed.

Yeah, but Donnie is playing bass with Empire of the Sun live.

He could have stopped Nick and Luke. He had plenty of time.

i dont get it can someone break it down for me ? did he use his track when he was told not to ?
more more now now - Jul 28, 2009 at 06:53pm
if Donnie Sloan can write such good songs why are Sneaky so damn crap??????

A : are you Donnie?????
Michael Moore - Jul 30, 2009 at 12:12am
Sorry A, but i think you are the one who has it wrong. Donnie has been working on a failed solo career for 5 years. He wrote the backings and was well aware Empire wanted to use them. They talked about it for 3 years and Donnie even went into the studio and played with the guys. Donnie then signed a release and actually earns more money than Empire do on these songs. Then when it blew up he is simply having a whinge because he would have preferred if it was his solo career that had taken off instead....

If these guys sound anything like MGMT live, they should be shot along with Donnie.
