Are we really surprised that Chris Martin and co. are rip-off merchants?

From the German forefathers of electronic music to New York City unknowns, Chris Martin has acknowledged and denied (respectively) pilfering melodies for Coldplay's gain. The second in plagiarism claims against their track "Viva La Vida" comes from guitarist Joe Satriani.

The Associated Press reports:

A noted guitarist has sued members of Coldplay, claiming the band's smash hit "Viva La Vida" copied parts of one of his songs.

The copyright infringement lawsuit by Joe Satriani was filed Thursday in federal court in Los Angeles.

The 52-year-old claims Coldplay copied "substantial, original portions" of his 2004 song, "If I Could Fly." The Coldplay hit, which was nominated for a Grammy this week, has topped charts around the world and been used to sell iPods in commercials.

Representatives for the band and their label, Capitol Records, did not return calls seeking comment on Friday.

Satriani wants a federal judge to order an accounting so he can determine how much money he may be owed, or else stop using the song.

This all but confirms my suspicion that "Clocks" was in fact written by a terrorist ring tone organization intent on inciting mass suicide.

well, it's a pretty generic progeression obviously if multiple people have written it, kinda like saying a 12 bar blues song is plagiarizing another. Generic, unimaginative songs are gonna sound a lot alike. Who cares?

calculus was formulated simultaneously on two different sides of the world, surely a shitty little melody like this can be, too. satriani is just making a money grab. and i'm not even going to begin about the guy in the second video.
