Art & About HIts Sydney

Currently in its eight year, Sydney’s biggest public arts festival Art & About is back this October with works by diverse contemporary artists from Australia and oversees. For those who don’t know, the festival aims to enhance the city’s streets, public spaces and venues through free, highly accessible and engaging art exhibitions, installations, performances and events. There’s a tonne of events and listings but make sure to check our festival must-sees below…


Still Life – October 1
The official launch of Art & About takes place this Thursday October 1.
That night, the winner of the “Still Life” $10,000 outdoor photography exhibition will be announced; entrants include photographer Kasia Werstak, who’s entry “Applause” captures The Presets homecoming gig at the Hordern.
(Kasia has shot everyone from Hedi Slimane, Grace Jones, Phoenix & worked on a music video with Daniel Askill)

Uncover Oxford Street, Doppleganger: October 18
Oxford Art Factory will be transformed into Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory, with music, art, performance and design from the Sydney Underground scene. At 7pm OAF hosts the Exploding Plastic Inevitable Party, with bands covering The Velvet Underground.

Laneways By George: October 1 – 31 January
Eight inner city laneways have been converted into installations ranging from bars, to an atrium and infinity forest – challenging us to think about the future and the changing role of public spaces.

Indigenous Art Program
Free Aboriginal Art Workshops – October 10 & 11
Romance Was Born collaborator (Esme Timbery, she created the amazing shell encrusted heels for their amazing Fashion Week show earlier this year) will be working at free public workshops down at Custom’s House, as part of the Indigenous Art Program.

I ♥ Kings Cross: October 10-25
A collaborative knitting graffiti project which will see trees, poles, signs and other streetscape objects adorned with knitting created by the local community. Launched by artist collective Reef Knot.
