Surfing royalty and unconfirmed water elemental Kelly Slater has posted an x-ray image of his foot after a mishap on the waves, and in our professional medical opinion, it's proper fucked.

Old mate and eleven-time world champion took to the waves ahead of the World Surf League's Jeffreys Bay event, when a pretty-standard wave conspired to turn his foot into a taco.

As he put it on Instagram, "you ever folded your entire foot backwards?" We have not, no, and to be entirely honest we're not too keen to change that.

The 45-year-old explained "I pulled into a barrel this morning and the whitewash bounced the board back into my foot as I hit the closeout, taking all the pressure into the metatarsals.

"Kinda like smashing my foot with a big hammer as hard as I can. Sorta feels like I'm giving birth out of my foot right now!"

The fella still managed to have a reasonably upbeat take on having his digits absolutely bashed, saying "it sucks but so many people deal with such horrible things around this world everyday that a broken foot is pretty minor in the scheme of things."

Speculation has mounted as to whether the injury will spur Kelly into retirement. We'd retire from damn near anything if it meant our tootsies face the prospect of a random mangling, but we're not the greatest male surfer of all time. So.

Good luck with the recovery, hombre.
