High end bags, for the most part, can make deft investment pieces.
Buy a Chanel Classic Flap bag and there's a fair chance you'll make money on it if you decide to resell (over the last six years, the bag’s worth has escalated by more than 70 percent).
Other bags aren't so worth it.
Take, for instance, Balenciaga's fresh new Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag.
For sale here, the bag's asking price is $2,610AUD.
Only thing is, to the untrained eye (which is basically the entire population sans a sprinkling of fashion editors) this bag is identical to the ones IKEA have been selling since 1996.
The main difference is that the Balenciaga one is made out of "blue wrinkled, glazed leather" as opposed to plastic. Apart from that, you'd have as much luck telling them apart as you would Mary-Kate & Ashley.
If you were given the opportunity to chose between the two, you'd probably go the IKEA since you can wash and recycle it.
IKEA took this blatant rip in their stride, telling the Today show in the US:
"We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!"
Balenciaga, on the other hand, is yet to comment on the similarities.
